Professionalism in Healthcare Starts with Presentation: AHASA’s Dress Code Policy

A patient’s first impression of a nurse or healthcare worker often forms before a single word is spoken. The crispness of a uniform, the neatness of appearance and the confidence of presentation quietly communicate competence, care and trust.

In a profession built on precision and compassion, these silent signals matter.

Recognising the power of presentation, AHASA has introduced a Standardised Dress Code Guideline for agency-placed healthcare professionals. This new policy goes beyond clothing- it reinforces the professionalism and ethical standards that patients, facilities and fellow healthcare workers rely on every day.

The guideline provides a practical, industry-wide standard for agency staff working in public and private facilities. It aligns with infection control practices, SANC regulations, and facility-specific requirements, ensuring that appearance supports both safety and credibility.

After months of consultation and testing, AHASA recommends:

  • Navy blue uniform as the preferred choice for agency healthcare professionals.
  • Navy V-neck tunic top paired with matching pants for both men and women.
  • Practical design features: side slits for easy movement, functional pockets, and loops for epaulettes where needed.
  • High-quality, non-transparent fabric that prevents pilling and maintains a polished appearance.
  • Scrubs for specialised areas such as ICU, theatre, and trauma units.
  • Navy fleece jackets for warmth (to be removed inside clinical areas).
  • Optional skirt (knee to mid-calf length) for female staff as an alternative to pants.

To make adoption simple and cost-effective, AHASA has partnered with trusted suppliers who provide uniforms that meet these specifications.

AHASA Member agencies enjoy exclusive discounts, making it easier to adopt the dress code without compromising quality. For supplier details or preferred rates, agencies can contact info@ahasa.org or call 083 444 9227.

This initiative is more than a uniform policy- it is a commitment to professional pride.
By following the AHASA Standardised Dress Code, agency healthcare workers not only meet regulatory requirements but also project the professionalism that builds trust with patients and strengthens the reputation of nursing and healthcare across South Africa.

Every encounter begins with a first impression.
AHASA’s dress code ensures that the first message healthcare professionals send is one of competence, care, and respect.
